McMillan, Gervan, 1904-1951

Medical practitioner and politician; married Ethel Emma Black, 1929. Gained medical degree, 1928. Practiced at Kurow in the Waitaki hydro work camps. Joined the Labour Party in 1931 and developed the principles for a national health service. Involved with Ammonia Casale Company, Kurow, in Jan 1933. In 1935 was elected to the Dunedin City Council and as Labour MP for Dunedin West. Appointed Minister of Marine, Scientific and Industrial Research, and Prisons, 1940. Resigned from cabinet in 1941 and from Parliament in 1943. Established the largest medical practice in NZ. Served on the Dunedin City Council, the Otago Hospital Board and was deputy-mayor when he died. (See `Southern people; a dictionary of Otago Southland biography', 1998; DNZB, v4, p322-323, M25).
