City of New York (Ship : Built 1885)

Samson (Ship : Built 1885)

Admiral Byrd's flagship on his first Antarctic Expedition (1928-1930). She was a Norwegian sealing ship, built as a barquentine in 1885, with an auxiliary coal-burning steam engine, launched as the "Samson". She had several changes of name according to Lloyd's Register, before being purchased for the 1928 expedition, and renamed City of New York. She was converted to a barque by putting yards on the mainmast. See "Antartica : an encyclopedia" (Vol 1, p 191-192) by John Stewart; "Beneath a wandering star" by Hilton L Willcox; and Lloyd's Register (1929-1930)
