Description: Photographs of buildings, people, industry, and landscapes taken by Les Cleveland 1960 to 1971 and 1995 to 2009 and printed 1960 to 1972 and 1995 to 2009. All prints have captions which include the title that Cleveland gave the photograph (often including the location it was taken) and the date it was taken and printed. Almost all images are stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph" and some are also stamped with Cleveland's home address. The majority are signed by Cleveland and all are stamped or otherwise identified by Cleveland as being a "Vintage Print". A small number of prints include reference numbers to Cleveland's index cards. Identified people are Mary Cleveland (in nudes taken on Mount Ruapehu, at Ketetahi Springs, and in the Te Naihi Gorge), John Angus "Opo" (at Mussel Point), Pussy Galore and Teddy Bare (in the window of Purple Onion Revue Bar), Prue Evans (in Kaikoura and on a [camping trip?] at Lake Tennyson), Annabel Porter and her child (in Martinborough), Lisa (employee photographed at Just Teasing Hairdressers in Wellington), Barry Hendricksen [also recorded as Barrie Henderickson] of the Helensville Railway Trust, and Cleveland's grandchildren Maxwell and Madeline who are being read to from a storybook. Description: Photographs relating to mountaineering and skiing taken by Les Cleveland circa 1950s to circa 1970. A small number of prints include caption information on the rear of the print. One vintage print is stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph." Contains prints of scenic mountain landscapes which feature peaks, valleys, and glaciers in the Southern Alps (including Mount Cook). There are several aerial photographs. Unidentified mountaineers are photographed, including climbers roped together on a mountain face, building a snow cave, and at mountain huts. Also contains photographs of a group backcountry skiing, likely in the South Island. Downhill ski scenes are mainly taken at Whakapapa Ski Field. People, in skiing attire, are photographed but are unidentified with the exception of Austrian ski instructor Joe Maka[d?] (giving a lesson) and Judy Ryan of the Taupo Ski Club ( in a group photograph with staff from the National Downhill). People are photographed relaxing in ski huts and smoking, and one woman has her leg in a full cast. Includes photographs of the Cleveland and Porter families in Martinborough, a portrait of Les Cleveland, and Peter, Donna, Mary, and Edward Cleveland with a dog [husky?]. Unidentified people include a young woman, cafe patrons seated indoors and outdoors at Pātaka Museum and Art Gallery in Porirua, and an unidentified group with a snow plough. A group portrait shows the Coal Miners' Ball Committee, circa 1913 to 1914. Wellington buildings are also photographed, including the Chinese church on Frederick Street, a sign saying "Jesus Loves the All Blacks" outside St John's Church on Willis Street (also contains an accompanying news article), and the ruins of the Miramar Gasworks. Three contact sheet strips show scenes from Mussel Point, West Coast, including children at Carter's settlement (including playing on swings at a playground) and two women working in the Carters' Sawmill Store at Hannah's Clearing in Haast. Description: Prints taken on at least three separate trips to the United States, circa 1970s, circa 1994 to 1995, and 2003 to 2004. Photographs mainly taken by Les Cleveland with some possibly taken by Mary Cleveland. Also, a small number of prints taken in Australia. Mary Cleveland is pictured in an American city [San Francisco?] in the 1970s in front of various marquees including one reading "Exotic Lady Wrestlers". Photographs from New York City in circa 1994 show Manhattan street scenes, CD and record stall at Union Square, signs advertising "The Who's Tommy", Central Park (by the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir), front desk staff and the cafeteria at the Whitney Museum (Upper East Side), the subway system (escalators, inside carriages), and an interior at the Metropolitan Museum showing the European sculpture court. Washington D. C. photographs include the plane "Galloping Gertie" as well as other scenes at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, a car accident at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (with unidentified people watching on), unidentified homeless people, and scenes at an ice-cream parlour and a bookshop. A set of photographs show both the inside and outside the National Gallery of Art with the interior scenes showing gallery spaces and exhibits at the time of the exhibition 'The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein'. Mary Cleveland appears in a number of these images. Scenes outside show the inauguration parade of Mayor Marion Barry. The parade features the Ballou High School Marching Knights and other marching bands, Miss D.C. USA, stilt walkers and others on foot in traditional African dress with some people playing a variety of instruments, a group performing a dragon dance, and youth from Ward 5. Las Vegas photographs are taken circa 1995 and feature casinos and street scenes. One set of photographs show the Auto Collections Vintage Car Museum at The Linq hotel-casino in Las Vegas, another shows a stage performance by the Rockettes, and a third shows the interior of and patrons gambling at The Excalibur Hotel and Casino. Prints also include scenes at a fast food restaurant Dunkin' Donuts, a Fred Harvey Travel Store, and a model of the body of Jesus Christ with stigmata, likely taken in either Arizona or Las Vegas. Description: Prints of South Island and family scenes as well as tableaux constructed with dolls taken by Les Cleveland, circa 2000s. Contains both black and white and colour prints developed Wellington Photographic Supplies and at Photo Center. Includes seven separate photo wallets. Prints include: - Buildings in Hokitika and Greymouth including The Sheep Station, Custom House, Courthouse with Richard John Seddon statue in front, Recreation Hotel, Royal Hotel, and Union Bank of Australia. Also bar towels hanging on a washing line to dry and an unidentified woman and a mannequin outside of a jewellery shop. Also other South Island buildings including the Garston Hotel, Cardrona Hotel, and the Fleming's Creamoata Mill, Firestation Backpackers, and Yamaha dealership in Gore. - Peter Cleveland (Les Cleveland's son), his partner [wife?] and their children Maxwell and Madeline, possibly at Lake Hawea. Cleveland and his wife Mary are also photographed with this group. - Mary Cleveland and others at "Waipori party". - Index print showing steam train at Shannon, Tokomaru store, and a wind farm [Tararua Wind Farm?]. - Constructed series 'The Mortgage', 'Aphrodite, and 'Death Car', where Cleveland uses dolls such as Barbies and other objects are arranged to form tableaux. - Iona Church, Port Chalmers.
