Harry Ayres was the New Zealand observer with the Australian Expedition ship "Kista Dan", at the Russian Geophysical Year Base, Haswell Island, Antarctica. He may also have acted as an official photographer.

Description: Contains photographs showing the alpine rescue of injured mountaineer Ruth Adams, February 1948. Photographs taken by Harold Earle Riddiford. Images include various points of the rescue including on the slopes of La Perouse, camp sites and huts, various points along the Cook River Valley, and fording the Cook River. Adams is seen in her stretcher; being pulled, carried, during rests, and finally being loaded onto the back of a flat-bed truck. Members of the rescue party, which included Harry Ayres, are also photographed. There are a number of photographs showing alpine areas. One photograph shows a small aircraft flying above the photographer. Title transcribed from item. Arrangement: Arrived at Library in an envelope labelled "Ruth Adams Rescue". Envelope contained two glassine bags with the first containing prints one through to 20 and the second prints 21 through to 28. Included in the second envelope were six negatives. Members of the rescue party included Harry Ayres, Edmund Hillary, Norman Hardie, and Mick Sullivan, who are also photographed. Quantity: 28 b&w original photographic print(s). Description: Album of photographs chiefly relating to interviews by Jim Henderson on the ZB radio programme `This is New Zealand', first and second episodes. The first image is a photograph of a pencilled portrait by British artist Ley Kenyon drawn while he was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III. The image, dated November 1943, is of New Zealand army officer John Walton who was acting Assistant Church of England chaplain in the camp. Signed and inscribed `In memory of our ordeal together, and the wild flowers you brought me from without'. Two additional loose copies of this image are inserted near the back of the album. Includes a loose photograph of the dolphin Pelorus Jack, with pencilled note on the back which reads `Pic taken, sent and given by A. Hawke, 3 Denton St., Gore, 23, 2, 1953; "I feel fairly certain that it was taken in 1911". First half of the album is entitled `Gone west' with images of people and places on the West Coast, South Island, including Harry Ayres (mountaineer and guide who coached Sir Edmund Hillary), [?] Butler (editor of the Grey River Argus), Tom Casey and Bob Friend (rangers at the white heron reserve near Okarito), Jack Hinton (V.C.), Jimmy Donovan (storekeeper at Okarito for over 60 years), the Nolan Family from Jackson Bay, and the `Golden-Elephant House' gold dredge at Arahura. Second half of the album is entitled `This is New Zealand, No. 2. Northland', and contains views of the Government Bird Sanctuary on Little Barrier Island, including caretakers May and Charlie Parkin. At the back of the album are loose images; two relate to the last issue of the Wyndham Farmer, a newspaper established in 1895 by Ewen Grevelle Macpherson, continued by his son Douglas until the final issue published on 18th February 1955. One image shows Douglas Macpherson, setting up the type for this issue, the other shows Douglas Macpherson with his assistant Cecil Dimmock. Dated largely in 1950, but also material from 1951. Also some inward correspondence. Named correspondents include Harry Ayres, Norman David Hardie, Wallace George Lowe, G Milne, Edmund Percival Hillary, and Edmund Cotter. Also contains correspondence with government representatives Frederick Widdowson Doidge, W A Bodkin, and Robert Hunter Wade as well as an unnamed passport officer. One letter from Doidge regards the group’s unsuccessful request to gain permission to climb Mount Everest. Also includes outward correspondence to companies and suppliers of goods and equipment such as pemmican maker W Stevenson of Irvine, Stevenson, and St George Company Limited, Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, and Bruce Woollen Manufacturing Company, Limited. On the reverse side of one of the letters to the latter company there is a pencil sketch of a machine relating to the manufacture of wool products.
