Description: Photographs taken by John Dobree Pascoe and others in the Southern Alps. They include views of mountaineers; views of mountain ranges and valleys; mountain huts and life enjoyed by the mountaineers. One sequence (pages 129-140) show aspects of the search for the body of Edgar Russell who died on Mount Avalanche in 1933. They show the location where he was lost on 30th July 1933, the search party, and the routes they took to search, finally succeeding on 6th August 1933. Pages 99-100, 83-84, and 105-106 show the building and completion of the Athur's Pass Canterbury Mountaineering Club mountain hut; page 87 has an indistinct view of the unveiling of the Arthur Dobson Memorial, on 18th April 1937 (5 km north of Arthur's Pass Village). Most of the photographs re fully described with names usually given with initials and surnames, or nicknames. Many of the people and places photographed are listed above. Description: Electronic document comprises transcribed Second World War letters between Margaret Barrer and her husband Bryan Barrer of Christchurch. The bulk of the transcribed letters are from Margaret Barrer to her husband serving in Italy, and detail daily family and domestic life, life in Cashmere, Christchurch, and local events, such as talks, film going, and theatre productions. Accounts of note include Margaret's trips to Arthurs Pass, an acquaintance receiving shock treatment, interaction with Mrs Dowling, wife of a conscientious objector, and Oscar Coberger sending an item from his German Red Cross parcel received while he was a prisoner of war. Letters from Bryan Barrer include details of his illness. Document includes letters to Bryan Barrer from Sergeant Bill Massetti, and Ray of Wades Avenue, Christchurch. The letters were transcribed by Anne Barrer from carbon copies and original airgraphs. Document also contains copies of a photograph of Margaret Barrer, and her painting 'The Fuschias', and a copy of a Christmas Greeting card from the 2NZEF.
