Isobel Dodds was a registered nurse, who after completing her training at Wellington Hospital in 1936, served as a volunteer nurse for the Republic in Spain during the civil war. Returned to New Zealand in 1939. Married John McGuire.

Description: 27 black and white photographs, all taken in 1937, during Isobel Dodds time nursing during the Spanish Civil War, and includes images of Renee Mary Shadbolt, a fellow nurse. The military hopital in this sequence was situated at Huete, a town about 83kms south-east of Madrid 14 colour photographs, (all?) taken in Mataro, Spain, circa 1989. Description: Isobel Dodds was born in Auckland in 1913. Describes her father's work and participation in the trade union movement. Talks about her mother's emigration to New Zealand on the same ship as Peter Fraser and the family's ongoing friendship with him. Recalls her training as a nurse, the early stages of the Spanish Civil War and volunteering to go to Spain as a nurse. Recalls the formation of the Spanish Medical Aid Committee (SMAC). Describes people involved in SMAC including George Jackson, Tom Stanley and Mrs McGowan. Talks about fellow nurses Renee Shadbolt and Millicent Sharples. Discusses why the Red Cross did not send nurses and the reaction of New Zealand's High Commissioner in London, Bill Jordan, to the policy of non-intervention by Britain and France. Describes interrogation by the police before leaving New Zealand, their trip to London and then to Barcelona, Valencia, Albacete and Huete. Describes the hospital at Huete (south east of Madrid), conditions, aspects of their work, learning and speaking Spanish, and patients and staff members. Mentions Catalan anarchists and Moorish prisoners. Talks about the plight of Willi Remmel, a member of the International Brigade, and his relationship with Renee Shadbolt. Description: Letters mainly addressed to Susan Skudder at Waikato University, written in response to letters from her or advertisements in journals regarding the experience of New Zealanders in response to the Spanish Civil War. Some letters are from people who were involved in the response, or who were active at the time; others are from librarians and historians responding to her requests for guidance and assistance. Some letters include arrangements for interviews or visits to repositories. Letters from Bert Roth include photocopies of items he thought of interest to her research. Two letters are addressed to her father, Lewis Arthur Skudder, from his colleague Bill Girling-Butcher; another is addressed to her thesis supervisor, Dr. Laurence Barber. One letter dated August 1970 is from Renee Shadbolt to John Shennan, an earlier researcher into New Zealand and the Spanish Civil War. Description: Comprises copies of photographs from the George Jackson collection of New Zealand Spanish Medical Aid Committee (SMAC) records, made when Susan Skudder was using the records for her research into New Zealand responses to the Spanish Civil War. Skudder used other copies of the same photographs as illustrations in her D.Phil thesis. The subjects comprise New Zealand surgeon, Dr. Douglas Jolly; the field ambulance and the field laundry truck purchased with funds from the SMAC; and a publicity photograph of the three nurses sent to Spain by the SMAC, Isobel Dodds, Rene Shadbolt, and Millicent Sharples.
