Description: Photographs taken by John Miller at the National conference in Te Kaha, 1993. Also a note that Miller wrote to Averil Herbert relating to the prints. All the prints have captions on the back written by the photographer. Images include group portraits, a landscape/seascape taken from Maraenui Hill, images of the pōwhiri, and people in the kāuta and whare kai, also images of clay work, bone carving, harakeke weaving, and carvings. Named people include Wi Taepa, Brian Flintoff, Marge Rau-Kupa, Arapera Kaa-Blank, Hana Te Hemara, Huihana Rewa, and Georgina Kirby. Title supplied by Library. Description: Tamati Heawutu Kupenga discusses in detail the men who went from Hiruharama with the 28th Maori Battalion. Also talks about men from the district who went to World War I and to the war in South Africa. Mentions the Kapohanga meeting house in Hiruharama, Te Poho-o-Te Wiwi kauta moving to Hiruharama, Tuotaina being used to build Nga Tamatoa, owner of Te Kaunoti and also talks about the VC hui at which he cooked and names the people in the kapa haka party at that hui. Discusses other people from the district, including men who worked at Matahiia Station and fencers from the district who went to work at Te Araroa. Explains certain placenames in the district and the proverb uttered by Te Atau. Talks about Te Aowera marae previously being situated elsewhere and how it is the marae used for Ringatu services and notes that he is a bellringer for the Ringatu services.
