Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in the Middle East and England during World War 2, 1939-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official purposes. Includes photographs of New Zealand fighter and bomber pilots serving with the Royal Air Force, and several British Official photographs relating to New Zealand fighter pilot with the RAF, James Allen Ward, who was awarded the Victoria Cross. Most individuals identified in the album are listed above. Scenes include a visit by NZ soldiers to stables run by the Egyptian Government at Heliopolis; a NZ military band on tour in Palestine as part of a recruiting campaign; the arrival of the first party of Women's War Service Auxiliary in Egypt, and scenes of their life in the Welfare Section and at the New Zealand Forces Club (p 7, p 146-149); and RNZAF trainees at the Air Observer School, Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada. Life, military training and manouevres in the Western desert; ordnance workshops; the advance in the Western Desert; a NZ medical unit, a mobile surgical unit; hospital scenes (p 100, 103-105, 111). Description: Photograph album containing photographs taken by unidentified photographers, mainly images of Edgar Kain, his fellow RAF pilots and officers, and his friends (including fiancee Joyce Phillips), scenes of airforce life in England and France, and images of RAF and German planes, most probably taken between 1939 and 1940. The caption on the first page says "RAF Station 'Digby': 1939". A photograph on the inside front cover of Kain in tennis clothing is captioned "Eddie 1936 New Zealand" and may have been added after Kain's death by his sister or mother. The first 50 pages have captions, apparently written by Edgar Kain, and the last page with captions has an entry at the bottom "This is Eddie's last page". Photographs after that page are not captioned and may have been added after Kain's death by his mother or sister, as some appear to be from before Kain's posting to Digby in 1939. A photograph from the first page, captioned "Cobber and the boy", possibly of Kain and his dog, is missing (it may be in the collection of loose photographs in PAColl-10491); a large photograph on the antepenultimate page is also missing.
