Description: First diary contains lengthy daily entries describing shipboard life and daily life at Napier with her family. The second diary contains brief entries describing daily life at Wallingford, raising children, social affairs, weather and visitors, etc. Few entries for years 1865 and 1871. 1858-1859 diary contains 3 loose pages and some torn out of volume Source of title - Supplied title Relationship complexity - Further Hannah Ormond diaries from a different provenance are held at MS-1739-1746 Scottish-born Hannah Richardson emigrated to New Zealand with her mother on board the Evening Star which left Gravesend on 11 Sep 1858 and arrived at Auckland on 21 Dec 1858. They then travelled by schooner to Napier where they joined George Richardson, Hannah's brother, who had emigrated the year before. Hannah married John Ormond, a well-known political figure in the area, on 4 Dec 1860 and settled at Wallingford Station near Waipukurau, Hawkes Bay Quantity: 2 volume(s). Generally Nelson briefly noted the weather, his main daily activity and occasionally made entries with more information. The diary is incomplete. Nelson describes his life in England prior to emigration on the `Devonshire' in 1863, describes the voyage, continues with his life in New Zealand, subsequent voyage to England in 1864 and his return in 1866. Description: Comprises original diaries of Hannah Ormond and her daughter Ada 1859-1912, describing daily domestic activities, social occasions and life at Wallingford station and Tintagel, the Ormond family properties at Waipukurau and Napier. Also includes copies of Ormond family papers held in UK, and some personal correspondence of Cynthia Wierzbicka 1958-1963. Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - The Library also holds the original diaries of Hannah Ormond kept during the years 1858-1859 and 1864-1872. These were donated by Lady J Ormond in 1981 and have been catalogued separately at MS-1737 and MS-1738. A typed transcript of her journal 1864-1872 is also held at MS-1747 Arrangement: Organized by series Mrs Wierzbicka is the daughter of Ada Ormond and granddaughter of Hannah and John Davies Ormond. J D ormond was an important social and political figure during the early years of European settlement in the Hawke's Bay district. Description: Two journals kept by Cartwright Brown when he was farming on leased land at Matapiro, Hawke's Bay, in the 1860s and later, at Cape Runaway, in the 1870s. The first one begins in London before his voyage to New Zealand, and includes a description of his journey; he described his daily routines but also has considerable entries describing the social and political life of the districts as well as farming. He worked on Major Whitmore's run and leased Matapiro run. The second volume includes a description of a visit to Switzerland in 1860, mares for Prince Arthur for 1867, list of letters received and sent, financial records, and then continues with diary entries from 16 Jul 1867 to 6 May 1879 in which he descirbes his daily routines etc. Brown stayed at Matapiro until 1869 when he was declared bankrupt. Until 1874, when he leased Whangaparaoa station at Cape Runaway, he worked in various situations including as a canteen keeper at copnstabulary outposts at Tarawera, Runanga and Opepe, helping other settlers at Flaxmere and managing a boiling down plant at Pakowhai Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s). 0.02 Linear Metres.
