Description: Interview with Lois Daish (nee Burton), born in Gisborne in 1940. Interviewers summary: Lois Daish is recognised for her newspaper column work, as food columnist for the Listener for many years, as a Wellington restaurateur and the author of four recipe books. Material recorded includes family background, education and domestic routines. Second child of well educated parents with a mature approach to child rearing, she and her sister grew up with both parents working full-time. She spent time in the United States as a school girl in the 1940s, then as a newly married woman in the 1960s when her husband was a Fulbright scholar at Berkley University. Interested in town planning issues which was the focus of her columns in community newspaper. Her career as a cook/restaurateur started at Downstage Theatre in about 1967 when she was called in at the last minute when there was no cook. This brief experience lead to later training and qualifications and she went on to own several well-known Wellington restaurants. As food columnist for many years with the Listener and author of several food books she influenced generations of amateur and professional cooks.
