Album of portraits and photographs from the South Pacific

Description: Photograph album with 51 black and white, and one colour photographic print, depicting people and places, including many in the Pacific. Most of the photographers are not identified, but it is likely that many would have been taken by Thomas Sims, while others are postcard-backed commercial prints. Many of the photographs are likely to be dated from a visit by Sims to the Pacific in 1916, and later. Photographs include: - Family and group portraits in studio settings, domestic interior settings, and outdoor settings - Building in Suva on Macarthur Street with palms in foreground - Church interiors and exteriors - Seascape with moored boats and sunlight breaking through clouds - Portrait of a child seated on a natural swing consisting of a vine - Interior with domestic accessories, including porcelain, cutlery, silverware, and a clock - Group portrait of four female subjects in the Pacific holding floral arrangements - Large thatched building in the Pacific with male subject standing in garden - View of harbour with large steamer (most likely the SS 'Talune') and smaller vessels at anchor - View over an urban area with some identifiable buildings, including "Bennett & Sutton's" and "N.Z. Loan & Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd" - Portrait of four New Zealand Expeditionary Force military personnel in uniform bearings arms, standing outside building in Samoa - Street scenes with military parades including mounted officers in uniform and spectators observing from rooftops - Various depictions of indiginous peoples of the Pacific Region in traditional attire - Various portraits and family group portraits, including portrait of a young female subject with the blindstamped studio imprint "Clifford Christchurch". - Also includes one colour photographic print depicting a couple, dated August 1964. Description: Compiled by S Percy Smith. Album includes 42 pages of photographs of Samoan scenery, towns, buildings, and portraits. Photographers represented include Burton Brothers, Thomas Andrew, J Davis, and A & W. As well as Samoa, this album includes photographs of men and one woman in the Solomon Islands; their ceremonial dress, weapons, and a house with an ornately woven patterned wall, and thatched roof. The last two photographs show men with weapons, wearing masks. Several photographs show images relating to Robert Louis Stevenson. One (on page 32) shows "R L Stevenson & party". Stevenson and his wife with European and Samoan men and women are seen standing at the back of a large group on the steps of the verandah at Vailima. The verandah is draped with fern leaves. The group seated in front on the stairs includes Samoan men, mostly holding axes, and a group of sailors holding musical instruments. Other scenes relating to Stevenson show his house (Vailima), and his tomb on Mount Vaea. Inscriptions: Album page - "From Mr S. Percy Smith" Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
