Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand. Description: Raye Elizabeth Boyle, later Sister Bernard, born Taumaranui 1940, after six months moved with parents to Wellsford, North Auckland. Discusses schooling at Wellsford State School and Sacred Heart Convent Wanganui as a boarder; on leaving school, training as a Karitane nurse at Stewart (Stuart?) Home in Wanganui and move to work at Calvary Hospital, Christchurch, 1960. Entered the Little Company of Mary in 1961 and recalls assisting with the babies in the Maternity wing at Calvary Hospital. Discusses postulancy, Novitiate, first vows, types of prayer in religious life, and learning acceptance and tolerance for other members of community. Mentions commencement of Nursing Training school in 1963. Talks about experience in theatres while training and training experience at Wellington hospital with children and casualty and infectious diseases. Describes Recovery unit and recovery nursing. Recalls, with the assistance of Sister Francis, Sister Kathleen, Wellington Hospital and Home of Compassion, setting up the first Theatre Sisters Group now known as Operating Room Nurses Association under the umbrella of the Registered Nurses Association. Reflects on the sale of Calvary Hospital, Christchurch, Wellington and Hawera and explains how the grief and loss was harder each time. Backgrounds move to smaller community, renting a house in Daniell Street [Newtown] and later buying a house in Rintoul Street. Discusses involvement with Sisters, Priests and Brothers for Justice in Newtown; district nursing in Newtown; voluntary district nursing in the Newtown Park flats under the umbrella of Wellington Hospital district nursing; involvement through City Council in setting up `Pennytouch' equivalent to Neighbourhood Watch, getting pensioners to keep an eye out for each other; experience as Rental Arrears Officer for City Council; involvement on Advisory Committee in the Homecare programme set up by Wesleycare, becoming Community Care manager in 1993. Describes the development of the programme for the elderly - making sure their voices are heard etc and also addressing loneliness. Mentions involvement with Age Concern and Women's Night shelter for women who are homeless. Backgrounds the establishment of Catholic Health Care Facilities of Aotearoa New Zealand in 2001. Mentions Vatican II and the changes over the years since. Description: Interview with sisters Witarina Harris (nee Mitchell), born 1906 in Ohinemutu, and Francie Taylor (nee Mitchell), born 1911 in Ohinemutu. They mention being involved with the Poneke Anglican Maori Mission group with Lady Pomare as a precursor to the Ngati Poneke group, supporting her speeches with waiata (song) when required, and performing for 'society' people such as the Todds. Witarina Harris and Francie Taylor both talk about the loneliness they felt arriving in Wellington, seeing few Maori and going to the movies to cry. Witarina Harris mentions working for Apirana Ngata at parliament. Refers to some Maori households hanging gum leaves from the ceiling to prevent colds. Talks about Witarina's voice and singing, Ngati Poneke concerts, dressing in smart 'Pakeha' fashion, and the clothing inspection on Club nights. Mentions encouraging young Maori they met socially to come to Ngati Poneke nights. Talks in detail about Ngati Poneke's war effort during World War II, performing every night to American servicemen at their camps. Describes socialising afterwards, the phonecalls the next day, and the parties of Ngati Poneke women and American soldiers, marines and sailors, where American officers brought champagne and cigarettes. Mentions Ngati Poneke's efforts to host the Maori Battalion organised by Lady Pomare, providing them with their last meal before boarding ship and welcoming them on their return on the Pipitea wharf. Witarina Harris mentions falling in love with her husband Reg, and on his return from the war, no longer being able to perform with Ngati Poneke. Hulme, Keri, 1947-2021: 'The bone people' manuscript and book

Description: An original annotated typescript of “the bone people“ and a 1985 edition of the published book. The manuscript has 458 numbered and 24 unnumbered pages of single sided typescript. There are unnumbered pages at the beginning, and at chapter and part breaks. Following a blue divider, the first typed page reads “By Kerry A. L. Hulme. Moteuka, 1966 - Moeraki & West Coast, 1976.” This is followed by three pages of “Māori words and phrases”. The pages after these are numbered on the top righthand corner in black felt tip pen. Many pages contain some alteration using either the typewriter, blue and black ink, and pencil. These include corrected spelling, shifting word order and word insertions. A few pages have slightly fuller annotations. The annotations appear to be in the same hand throughout. It is thought to be Keri Hulme’s handwriting. Each page has been hole punched to fit in a ringbinder, and a section of pages have been hole punched on both sides. The book is a 1985 edition published by Spiral in association with Hodder and Stoughton. Information on the provenance was provided by the Hulme whānau, August 2022. Information on provenance and handwritten annotations were provided by Marian Evans (August 2022) who was part of the Spiral Collective that first published the novel. Keri Hulme worked as a tobacco picker in Motueka in the mid 1960s. It was there she began to write about a character who was appearing in her dreams. Initially she wrote a short story “Simon Peter’s shell” which she later destroyed. She continued to rework the characters from this story and her dreams over the next 12 years and created several manuscripts. In 1985 'the bone people' became the first New Zealand novel to win the Booker Prize and the first debut novel to win. Provenance: The manuscript was part of the Hulme estate and was sold through the Dunbar Sloane Auction House by the Hulme whānau. This version was thought to have been in the possession of Hulme's mother. Processing information: The typescript came to the Library in two blue plastic Lever Arch folders. The first folder went to the end of part two at numbered page 270. The typescript has been rehoused in three acid-free folders for conservation reasons. The original folders have been kept, Library reference MSX-10205.
