Description: Letters, accounts, marriage certificate concern activities of Bridges, Murray and Gilfillan families includes letter written just prior to departure on board the `Mandarin'. Letter from Wanganui describes activities in establishing farm and building of a boat. Letter from James Allison to his wife Georgina in Wanganui from Wellington, Jan 1856. Mary Bridges married John Alexander Gilfillan in Oct 1838 and they brought their family to NZ on `Mandarin' in 1841. They established a farm at Matarawa, Wanganui where Gilfillan's wife and four children were massacred on 18 Apr 1847.
