Involved in the Melrose Proprietors in 1887; Melrose was named after him. married Jessie Burne Luxford in 1886. Only daughter Muriel married John Patrick Daunt Leahy on 20 Aug 1919 at St James's Church, Lower Hutt (Evening post, 17 Oct 1919, p 1). Died in 1953 aged 96 years. Owner of a three-storeyed house ('Rato') in the Waiwhetu area of Lower Hutt. Large bush-covered area of his property became the Hayward Scenic Reserve.
