Formed in 1891, with origins in the Orpheus Glee Club. President in 1894 was G E Tolhurst, and other office-bearers were: E Pearce, George Beetham, A Gray, J Whittall, J H Stringer, Robert Parker, J A Plimmer, Captain W de R Barclay, Theo H Ritchey. In 1915, the choir changed its name to Wellington Male Voice Choir, in line with other choirs who decided a British name for a British choir was preferable (See announcement in Evening Post, 20 October 1915, page 2).
