Description: A series recounting the adventures of "Joan": "To-day she is pulling down 60 bucks ..."; verso text "Sam knows what he wants - for him the slaughter can't last long enough. Joan loves Bob but she doesn't know when he will come back". Handsome Bob Harrison, Joan's fiance, is on the front thousands of miles away fighting for guys like Sam Levy, while Sam is taking liberties with Joan. "Joan is feeling so lonely anyway ...."; verso text: "Sam at work" (Sam Levy at work seducing his secretary Joan Hopkins) "Poor little Joan! She is still thinking of Bob ...." verso text: "The way of all flesh". Joan still thinks of Bob but dreads his return because of her conduct while he is away. "It was a rude awakening for her ..."; verso text "The moment she dreaded ... two years is a long time for any girl" (Joan and Sam meet amputee Bob in the street; he had been posted as missing) These leaflets were probably intended for American troops as they discuss the social situation in New York. Amelia describes the family home in Christchurch, early memories of Kingsford Smith and being a university swimming champion. Met and married Karl Haas, a Jew from Germany, and they started farming in Pahiatua in 1939. Gives a detailed description of Karl's relations in Germany, being a Jew in New Zealand and Karl's illness (Parkinsons Disease). Discusses her development of their passion fruit industry (Hilltop Passion Fruit) over a twenty five year period. Recalls Jewish upbringing and awareness of Jewishness as a child and lists Jewish observances and Friday nights in her home. Talks about Habonim and Hebrew School. Discusses mother's training and work as speech teacher and her community work, being elected onto the Board of Management at Takapuna Grammar School and her election to the Takapuna City Council. Recalls attending St Anne's primary school and describes experience of being Jewish at a church school. Mentions experiencing anti-semitic treatment from a teacher at Belmont School (Intermediate). Discusses being Jewish at Takapuna Grammar School. Discusses education at Auckland University, marriage at the age of 21, going to London with husband who was studying Orthodontics and experience of teaching for a year at Bulstrode Girls' Secondary Modern School at Hounslow near Heathrow Airport. Recalls returning to New Zealand and starting a family. Discusses changing social expectations of motherhood and voluntary work undertaken while bringing up her children. Talks about birth of second son in 1973 with Down's Syndrome and being `thrust' into the world of special education. Describes the ignorance which prevailed about similar children. Discusses the beginnings of what became a lifetime of lobbying to improve conditions in New Zealand for her son and other children. Notes that son became the first child at Auckland Grammar School with Down's Syndrome. Discusses Jewish upbringing and what it was like being a Jewish student at St Cuthbert's School. Talks about the divisions in the Jewish community, based on status differences and between some of the longer established affluent families and newer-comers.
