Description: Arthur Henry Richards born Hokitika 1899. Outlines family background - both grandfathers were Methodist Ministers. Maternal grandfather, Rev William Lee arrived in New Zealand 1870 and was well known in Oamaru. Recalls early life; strong methodist upbringing; Sunday routine; childhood pranks; first wireless; furnishings of the parsonages; chores and home help; flu Epidemic (1918); transport - Enfield motorbike and sidecar, later a model T Ford; Depression (1930s), with reference to riots in Wellington and the smashing of windows at Kirkcaldies; Temperance organization - The Band of Hope; social activities which were mostly linked to church; World War I farewell parades and recalls the return of the first troops including Frickleton, VC and the Tweedie's hero welcome reception in the town. Describes the effect of the war on Napier High School where many masters were called away. Recalls first day and first jobs at Customs, Napier, based mainly at the Port building at Ahuriri. Talks about Napier Port, describing the effects of the earthquake damage and social life in Napier before the earthquake.
