Singer songwriter. Was founder member of the pop group, `The Fourmyula' and a successful songwriter. Is now an ex-member of the Warratahs. His song 'Nature' was voted, in 2002, the best New Zealand song in the last 75 years. Born New Plymouth. Son of James Mason 1918-1987 and Stellar Mason (née Hughes), b. 1922.

Description: Wayne Mason was born in New Plymouth, in 1949. Talks about his family, memories of New Plymouth including the Queen's visit in 1953, listening to pop music on the radio, time spent in Rotorua and move to Wellington in 1957 to settle in new suburb of Upper Hutt. Discusses local church and Boy's Brigade, the Cuban crisis, anti-communism, and music lessons. Recounts formation of his music group, the Insects, with Martin Hope, Les Grubner and Chris Parry. Outlines job as broadcasting engineer in 1966, temporary group members Frank Stevenson, better known as Frankie Stevens, and Roger Gascoigne and renaming band as Fourmyula. Discusses the flower power movement, new fashion trends, winning Wellington Battle of the Bands in 1968 and touring New Zealand. Remembers sinking of the Wahine while on tour. Talks about songwriting and recording, chart successes and travel to England. Outlines recording at Abbey Road studios, meeting Paul Macartney and decision to return to New Zealand. Recalls release in 1970 of 'Nature', a number one hit on New Zealand charts. Recounts leaving band to get married, replaced by Paul Pryde, his return and tours of Europe and Scandanavia.
