Captain Henry Mercer. Soldier with the Royal Artillery, killed at Rangiriri on 20 November 1863. The Waikato township Mercer was named after him. Brother of Major A H H Mercer (late of 89th Regiment). Wrote to Donald McLean in 1860s from Auckland re land he owned at Remuera.

In the middle distance are houses and the outline of a church, while the Waitemata Harbour, with North Head and Rangitoto Island (inaccurately drawn) are in the background Possibly copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, although no Williams' original for this view is known. Captain Henry Mercer was killed at Rangiriri in October 1863. The town Mercer was named after him. Commodore Burnett was in charge of H. M. S. Orpheus, which ran ashore on the Manukau Bar in February 1863, with the loss of much of its crew, including Burnett.
