Born in Yorkshire, England, he came to New Zealand in 1851. He took up the Birchwood Run on the Jacob's River and also Manapouri Lake Station. He represented New River in Southland Provincial Council in 1861-1864. In 1866 he moved to Wanganui where he entered into business in 1874 as an auctioneer and stock and station agent (F A Krull being a partner later). He was a member of the Borough Council and Mayor of Wanganui 1892-1896. He was secretary of the Wanganui Jockey Club and Wanganui Gas Company. Married Anna Eleanor Augusta Lawlor in 1859.
