Describes early working life, leaving school aged 14, working on a farm at Puketaha, joining a firm and learning the trade of body building (buses and farm implements) and working on a service station as a shareholder in Te Kuiti. Recalls never being without a job during the Depression. Talks about interest in Child Welfare and being appointed as Field Officer to Child Welfare in Palmerston North in 1939.
