Greville, Reginald Palmer, 1862-1923

Surveyor. In 1891 he gained his certificate as an authorised surveyor. Appointed Assistant Surveyor in the Lands and Survey Department in 1882 having joined the Department in 1878. He also qualified as a solicitor. He was responsible for much of the surveying of the Forty Mile Bush district. From 1906-1910 he served on the staff of the Geological Survey of New Zealand. In 1914 he was stationed at Hamilton and in that year acted as chairman of the Kauri Gum Commission and afterwards initiated the Kauri Gum Department. In 1919 he was appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor of the North Auckland Land District when the Auckland Land District was partitioned into two districts. His duties included that of Kauri Gum Commissioner, and he was sent to America to investigate the Kauri gum market. Water supplies, walking tracks, sites of McLean's house, a woolshed and sheepyards and a fisherman's hut are marked. Streams and localities have Maori names. A note refers to an abundance of goats on the island. Stamps on bottom right corner: 14958. Indexed Stamp on bottom right is of the District Land and Survey Office, Wellington.
