Second son of Henry Samuel Knowles. Arrived with parents in 1841 aboard the ship 'Oriental'. Attended St John's College in Tamaki, Auckland. Surveyor, known to have worked in the southern part of North Island prior to the formation of Dept. of Lands and Survey. Worked with C M Igglesden to copy a map of the Wairarapa in July 1859. Married Louisa Smith in 1860. Died on 19 Jul 1887, at his brother's residence, Featherston Terrace, Wellington (Feilding star, 23 Jul 1887, p 2).

Description: Topographical map, with triangulations, of the area from Aruwaru to Palmerston which is part of the Tararua ranges. Includes named tracks, one of which is Carkeek's, and named streams. A handwritten note adjacent to the map states: Heights to be added to standard sheet - the Kahutarawa Stream is one of the branches of the Tureiti Stream.
