Tipene Kahupuku was baptised in 1841 at Cloudy Bay. Although Tipene cannot be identified he probably had whakapapa to Ngati Toa - Ngati Rarua - Ngati Koata or Te Ati Awa because these tribes occupied the Cloudy Bay - Wairau area at this time.
