A chief of the Ngati Te Ra hapu of Ngati Toa, Matiaha lived at Kapiti Island on the Kaiwharahwhara block. On August 14, 1845, he married Rutera Ponuni, the sister of the Ngati Toa chief Te Kanawa and nearly related to the Cootes family.
