Description: Included are records of the National Dance Archive of New Zealand, including administrative records and records collected by the Archive. The main part of the Collection, however, comprises collections relating to particular dancers, or dance groups, which have been donated to the Archive. These include papers relating to Douglas Wright, Modern Dance Group, Gisa Taglicht, various modern dance companies and productions and a smaller amount of ballet material. Source of title - supplied title Other - Includes 5 x 78 rpm records used by Gisa Taglicht in her performances and training sessions and 3 music scores Arrangement: In addition to the series of administrative records the various groups of deposited papers have been assigned separate series. Provenance: This collection comprises both the working records of the Dance Archive itself (and some of its predecessor body, the National Dance Federation), as well as various collections of deposited papers that had been given to the Archive by various people associated with dance in New Zealand. Description: Betty Ditfort (nee Stone) born Methven. Outlines family background - paternal grandmother, Mary Ellen Webb, came from Cornwall, England on the `Mercury'. Recalls schools days at Methven and involvement in sport at school and later at Teachers' College in Christchurch, being awarded a third year specialising in Physical education, which meant going to Dunedin Teachers' College. Gives details of career as an advisor to PE teachers which involved travelling, giving sample classes and suggesting ideas to teachers. Joined Dunedin Teachers' College PE Department as a lecturer, remaining there 22 years. Recalls being the first recipient of the NZ Umpires Badge in 1960. Describes the exams, theoretical exam and then practical exams at different levels. Discusses NZUA and NZBA. Was a Canterbury examiner for many years, President of the Umpires Association, then travelled as a New Zealand examiner for eleven years. Mentions; Lorraine Bint; Betty Steffenson; Shirley Langright and Jan Hefford. Discusses first International Federation of Netball Association Tournament in 1963. Outlines family background - father, Frederick George Soper, a professor of Chemistry and later Vice Chancellor, University of Otago. Describes childhood recollections and education with reference to interest in gymnastics. Attended St Hilda's, a private girls' school in Dunedin, and later Otago Girls' High School. Compares both schools. Discusses father's expectations for her career and gives reasons for choosing `Phys Ed' (Physical Education). Recalls that `it was still the era when girls were expected to be frail and needing care'.
