Description: The story of Robert and Marie Francis who arrived in Otago in 1876 on the `Sir Lancelot' as cabin passengers. Both were well-educated and wealthy by many standards. Robert was described as a gentleman, Marie could read the Greek testament and play the piano. On arrival Robert worked as a clerk, commercial traveller, land and estate agent and finally music shop owner. The Francis family moved often, living first in Otago, then Nelson and finally Christchurch. They had a family of nine children. The essay details Robert's family background, arrival in the `Sir Lancelot', Dunedin of the 1870s-1890s, brief details about each of his children, education of daughter Caroline in Nelson, family memories of Robert and Marie, family heirlooms. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand scenes and events, taken between 1957 and 1967 by Ron Potts and other family members, and collected by Angela Potts. Also photographs taken by unidentified photographers relating to Ron Potts' extended family and their involvement in World War One and World War Two. Most transparencies relate to holidays around New Zealand with photographs featuring landscapes, buildings, and infrastructure. The people who appear in the photographs are largely unidentified with the exception of members of royal families, Victor George Boivin, Ron and Angela Potts, and Bill Hamilton. Events photographed include air shows, British and Thai royal visits, the Hastings Blossom Festival, James Smith Christmas Parade in Wellington, evangelist Billy Graham's Crusade at Athletic Park, the 1963 New Zealand Grand Prix in Pukekohe, and the opening of Wellington Airport in 1959. Subject areas of focus include construction and Methodist church buildings. Title supplied by Library. Description: Diary written by Robert Francis initially during a voyage aboard the 'Sir Lancelot' from London to New Zealand in 1876, and continued in March to October 1882 to record everyday life. First entry records that the diary was presented to Francis by someone named Redman on 27 November 1875. Includes manuscript copies in pencil of the lyrics of liturgical music, including the hymn 'Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire' by James Montgomery (1771-1854), and an excerpt from the poem 'Charity' by William Cowper (1731-1800). Description: Electronic document, typed transcript of Edward (Ted) Charles Rowe's diary kept during the period 1900 to 1903. Entries are in three distinct sections. First part (19 June to 30 August 1900) details his daily activities around Christchurch area, visits to Lyttelton Port, courtship with Mill Francis (who later became his wife), attending various church activities, his depression, visiting his late sister's grave. Second part (27 Dec 1901 to 10 Jan 1902) details a holiday in which he travelled to Napier, Auckland, Wanganui and Wellington on a combination of ships and trains. Mentions friends, places visited and sermons attended. Third part (8 to 22 Dec 1903) details a holiday to Queenstown and Invercargill in which he travelled by train. Other - Heading of document gives the name of the diarist as Charles William Rowe, however the diarist is actually his son Edward (Ted) Charles Rowe. Description: Shows the recently-built Noah's Hotel (later called Rydges), on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Boulevard, Christchurch. The tall, curved white building is partly obscured in the foreground by the red brick Municipal Chambers building, set directly across Oxford Terrace. The Avon River can be seen in the extreme foreground, and a man sitting on a park bench is also visible on the river bank The artist painted this in the second half of the 1970s; her married name was Pike at the time The Municipal Chambers is now known as 'Our City O-Tautahi', and is a gallery and meeting venue.
