Identified people are: Senior Sergeant George Christopher Donnelly of Hokitika police; Ivy Harper and Bert Birchfield; Mike Armstrong and Jim Daken; Mary and Heather Cornwell; Charleston coal mine operator Neil Mouat; Mack Heinz; Tex Smith; Mike Armstrong; Henry Heveldt and M Bennett of Nolan's Mill; Garth Graham; meat shooters Mike Bennett and Kevin Blythell; John 'Opo' Angus, the Eggling brothers; helicopter pilot Ben Morris and Les's wife Mary Cleveland; and Johnny Hewer, Claire Easterbrook and Liam Easterbrook in front of the Neils Beach school house. Featured natural environments include the hot springs at Welcome Flat and the Karangarua Valley, River, Ranges, and the view from the Sefton bivouac, Ocean Beach, and Neils Beach, including car wrecks at the rubbish dump. Description: Photographs of people, buildings, industry, and landscapes taken by Les Cleveland between 1951 and 1959. Largely printed between 1951 and 1960, with some prints made later, possibly in the 1970s. All prints have captions which include the title Cleveland gave the photograph (often including the location of the photograph) and the date it was taken and printed. Almost all images are stamped "Les Cleveland Photograph" and some are also stamped with Cleveland's home address. The majority are signed by Cleveland and all are stamped or identified by Cleveland as being a "Vintage Print". Some prints include reference numbers to Cleveland's index cards. Identified people are Jack Ritchie (former licensee of the Junction Hotel, Dillmanstown), Ron Biggs (boiling a billy), Dorothy Debenham at Greymouth, Mary and Heather Cornwell at Milford Sounds, June McMillan at Makara Beach, Senior Sargent George Christopher Donnelly (making a bet at the Kumara Races), and Mike Armstrong (washing dishes in a hut at Welcome Flat). Timber workers are photographed at work at the Kopara Sawmill including Ted McGhie, Ron "Tiki" Brimmicombe, Doug Macalister, and Neil McLean. Unidentified people include timber workers, the crew of the fishing boat Hauiti (photographed in Milford Sound), men in fancy dress participating in the Mayor of Thorndon campaign, children lining up to go to the pictures in Greymouth, children on a bulldozer in Karamea, a boy fishing at Reefton, a man smoking an crib logging at the Arawhata River, and a climber resting on a rock by the Cook River. A Taupo Ski Club group is photographed outside Blyth Hut at Ohakune Ski Field [Turoa] and includes Les Cleveland as well as a box of Lux soap. Buildings photographed include in Greymouth (band rotunda, police station), in Westport (Seatons Boarding House on Bright Street, Kawatiri boarding house (also known as Flemings Boarding House), and St Canice's Catholic Church), and in Nelson Creek (Saddlers Store, Jimmy Diamond's hut, township). Further prints of buildings show the Stafford Literary Institute, flooded bushmen's huts at Mussel Point, a cottage at Blackball, a derelict house at Bell Hill, ornamental faces on the Aubrey Gualter building (corner of Brandon and Featherston Streets, Wellington), the Four Square store at Crofton, Club Hotel in Palmerston North, a two-storied house with external staircase in Turakina, Enterprise Printing in Nelson, a cottage on the road to Goldsborough, J McFarlane's Hotel in Kumara, the Whanganui town clock, and the Weights and Measures Office in New Plymouth. Photographs of industry include a Pelton wheel at Dillmanstown; remains of a gold dredge at Callaghans near Kumara; Jack's Mill near Nelson Creek including a Type CBA No 119 A&G Price Ltd bush locomotive, derelict mill buildings, and a slab elevator; Kopara Sawmill buildings; an open cast coal mine at Charleston; and dredge buckets abandoned at the side of the Greenstone River. Scenic prints show the Tatere River and Tatere Gorge, Moeraki River, the sea at Punakaiki, surf at Hokitika Beach, a log jam and driftwood at Karamea Beach, Okarito River, bush scenes (including at Waterworks Reserve), the head of the Karangarua River looking towards Copeland Pass, the Karangarua Gorge, and Lake Haupiri. Other photographs include gravestones at the cemetery in Charleston, a hedge cutter mounted on a surplus World War Two Bren Gun Carrier, and vehicle scenes outside the George Hotel, Otira Gorge (a Hupmobile tourer and a front-end loader lowering a V8 engine into a truck), Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Prints arrived at Library in no discernible order and were placed in a box labelled "Vintage Prints" by curatorial staff during appraisal. Description: Contains prints of scenes relating to Les Cleveland, his family life and photographic interests, circa 1913 to 1914, 1960s to 2000s. Photographs taken by Les Cleveland. Includes photographs of the Cleveland and Porter families in Martinborough, a portrait of Les Cleveland, and Peter, Donna, Mary, and Edward Cleveland with a dog [husky?]. Unidentified people include a young woman, cafe patrons seated indoors and outdoors at Pātaka Museum and Art Gallery in Porirua, and an unidentified group with a snow plough. A group portrait shows the Coal Miners' Ball Committee, circa 1913 to 1914. Wellington buildings are also photographed, including the Chinese church on Frederick Street, a sign saying "Jesus Loves the All Blacks" outside St John's Church on Willis Street (also contains an accompanying news article), and the ruins of the Miramar Gasworks. Three contact sheet strips show scenes from Mussel Point, West Coast, including children at Carter's settlement (including playing on swings at a playground) and two women working in the Carters' Sawmill Store at Hannah's Clearing in Haast. West Coast images show milled logs, horseback riders, a slip being cleared by a bulldozer, and men from Nolan's Mill drinking and smoking and playing with a dog. Also, six frames show Native American jewellers selling jewellery at the Palace of the Governors, Santa Fe, United States of America. Original enclosures (mainly print wallets) have been retained with prints. The imagelab photo wallet includes a commercial photographer's receipts and notes from Cleveland to the lab technician. Title supplied by Library. Negative of the photograph of the Coal Miners' Ball Committee print is at Alexander Turnbull Library 1/2-012633-F.
