Description: Seated life-size portrait of Prime Minister Savage holding papers referring to the League of Nations and to emancipation A photograph published in the Weekly news in 1937 shows Savage sitting for this portrait, with the artist also in the photograph. Reproduced in Gustafson, Barry. 'From the cradle to the grave; a biography of Michael Joseph Savage' (Auckland, Reed Methuen, 1986), opp. p. 185. Savage became Prime Minister of New Zealand in 1935 and died in 1940. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - John A. Berrie. Physical Description: Oil on canvas 1235 x 990 mm (sight) Provenance: This portrait was painted by London artist, John Berrie, during the Prime Minister's visit to London in May-June, 1937, for the Coronation and the Imperial Conference. It was paid for by Aucklander Ernest Davis, for presentation to the Auckland Labour Club.
