Contains 44 cartoon sketches from army life and travels in Britain and France during World War 1, 4 pages of photographs of family members or friends(?) and of samples of signwriting, 18 leaves of cuttings of advertisements from overseas(?) magazines, 3 loose watercolours, and loose newspaper photograph cuttings (the last dated 1957). Newsletter of the Liberal Catholic Church, 1957, is one of loose items. Includes one sketch of head of wife Florence May Gregory on pedestal, and at least one caricature of her. The front cover shows New Zealand and Australian soldiers raising their respective flags on a headland overlooking the sea, with a Union Jack in the top centre. The programme included the following performers: Victoria Palace Orchestra under Mr J Weaver), Joyce Brown (violin), Mabel Manson (song), Edward Lauri (song), Margaret Cooper (piano), Irene Vanbrugh (recitation), Little Florence Bayfield (dance), Violet Loraine; Lilian Braithwaite and Ben Webster in a duologue, Alfred Lester; Lorna and Toots Pounds; Albert Whelan (Australian entertainer), Sergeant Harold Nott (Australian marching song). Description: British booklet advertising Bovril beef extract drink in a patriotic way. The front cover shows a soldier and a sailor holding british flags, on either side of a jar of Bovril, with the white cliffs of Dover in the background. The back cover shows a reproduction of a poster (artist Tom Purvis) with a bull enlisting for war service at a recruiting tent. The bull says: "May place is at the front - I hear they want more Bovril". Inside are facts about the progress of the war, a photograph of Lord Kitchener, war questions to ask your friends, pictures of fighting guns, warshps, flags and aircraft; facts about British army pay and allowances for dependants, explanations of Navy and Army terms and diagrams of how mines are laid. There are illustrations of Army and navy badges, and a diagram of the comparative strengths of the navies and armies of allied countries. Description: Gives details of early life in Whangarei and Auckland and job with Post Office; refers to 1913 waterfront strike. Recalls enlistment, father's attitude. Was in the Post Office Cadets and refers to guarding the cable station at Doubtless Bay. Describes training, voyage to Egypt with the 9th Reinforcements. Discusses conditions in Egypt and Cairo, venereal disease, the Wazir area, relationship with natives and with Australians, also the type of training undertaken there. Went into the newly formed 2nd Auckland Infantry Regiment and became a sniper. Was sent with the New Zealand Division to France on the troopship 'Askinia' and, being a sniper, was assigned to a specialists' unit. Describes his duties and methods used for sniping. Recalls the trenches, the Germans, trench feet. Saw action at Armentieres and at the Somme 1916. Gassed during the Somme and sent to 2nd London General, also refers to being shellshocked and the treatment given. From hospital he was assigned postal duties at Hornchurch and later at London Headquarters Post Office, describes his duties. When fully recovered he volunteered to return to the war but during retraining strained heart and developed disorderly action of the heart. Describes conditions in France, the food, lice, rats, gambling, religious services, German prisoner of war, drinking. Recalls Nimot's desertion, Spain Avenue and comments on executions. Reference to Massey's Cossacks, General Godley and Brigadier Braithwaite. Returned to New Zealand on the 'Remuera' and received treatment for war injuries at Evelyn Firth Home. Comments later on his health as a result of the war. Describes return to civilian life working on farms, coal mining, road construction with reference to the Depression years. Enlisted, commissioned to organise the Home Guard. Comments on the RSA, conscription and gives views on war. Description: Peggy Ashton (nee Duffied) born England 1920. Recalls very early memories of young men begging and war wounded on the streets. Remembers the 1926 General Strike when father became a volunteer tram driver. Other childhood memories include: holidays at Scarborough; holiday in Belgium; move to the Isle of Man when father, an Anglican priest, got a `living'. Recalls getting Scholarship to study in France in the 1930s, and mentions Nazi flag flying in 1938 and conditions during a terrifying 10 months. Describes return to Isle of Man in 1938 and first job as a reporter on Isle of Man Times. Mentions exploring the Catholic faith but feeling it was not for her. Recalls the danger, boredom and terror by night of the war yearsl [World War 2]. Backgrounds meeting and marrying Fred Ashton in 1947 and coming to New Zealand ca 1948; Fred getting a job as a PO technician and Peggy seceretary to librarian at Victoria University. Mentions Edward and Ruby Dowcett and Joan and Neil Johnson. Joined the Society of Friends in 1950 and refers to Beth and Burger. Recalls death of daughter Margaret, a Downs Syndrome child and talks about involvement with IHC Parents' Association and starting the journal. In 1961 moved to Whangarei and started United Nations Branch, with reference to Hayden Gordon, Doris Beale, and Christine Farrand. In 1963 joined Maori Women's Welfare League and in 1969 moved to Auckland. Recalls joining Christian Pacifist Movement. Refers to Father Ron Sharp, Chris Barfoot, Joan Waters, Brian Shook and Boyd Henderson, all outraged at Vietnam War. Retired from paid employment in 1981 and discusses voluntary work: volunteer for Broadsheet; Springbok Tour marches; Anti Nuclear Movement; Christians for Peace and the `Quakerly' course of `Gifts and Discovery' which began April 1990.
