Born at Bath, England, the son of Joseph Harris who was a sculptor and friend of Sir Francis Chantrey. Began career as a seaman, becoming a captain, before settling to become a journalist. He arrived in New Zealand about 1853. Husband of Elisabeth Harris (née Bradford; 1839?-1906), and father of Catherine E V (Katie) Harris (1870?-1882). Buried in the family plot at Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington. According to the Bolton Street Cemetery index held in Photographic Archives he was buried in plot 0516, with a Sarah Harris (d 1904); however, from the transcription from the headstone held in MS Papers 2260 (Folder 35), he was buried in plot 0507, with his wife Elisabeth, his daughter Catherine (Katie), and his mother-in-law Elizabeth Bradford (1809?-1886).
