Godfrey, William Fowler (Dr), 1874-1945

Palmerston North medical practitioner. Born and trained in Edinburgh. Served with the British Army Medical Corps in the South African War. Emigrated with his wife to Manitoba (Canada), then left for New Zealand, settling in Palmerston North during World War I. A son (Robert) and two daughters (Mary and Margaret) were born in Canada; the last child (James) was born in Palmerston North. Worked in the Ureweras for the Presbyterian Mission at Ruatahuna, with Sister Annie Henry and Rev H J Fletcher in 1918; was active in Presbyterian affairs. Worked in general practice from his residence, 121 Grey Street. He and his wife Alice Isabella Knox Godfrey (née Wightman), are buried in Kelvin Grove Cemetery, Palmerston North.

Description: Comprises photograph of the first house Sister Annie lived in at Ruatahuna (ca 1918) with related letter and four newspaper obituaries published at the time of her death (1971). Source of title - Supplied title Sister Annie was ordained as a Presbyterian deaconess in 1916. In 1917 she was sent to Ruatahuna to open a mission where she worked with Rev J G Laughton and Dr W F Godfrey.
