Recalls conscription into Indian Medical Service, work and conditions in India and Ceylon, further study in England in psychiatry after the war, work in Uganda, her interest in Jungian theory and psychodynamics, analytic training as a Jungian analyst, work in child guidance clinics, marriage and return to New Zealand and the Wellington Child Guidance Clinic. Description: Roy Taylor was born in Hertfordshire, England in 1926. Relates upon his arrival in Wellington in April 1953 he was billeted at Trentham Immigration Hostel. Describes going to St. John's Anglican Church, meeting Colin Beaven, recalls his response to an invitation to a Methodist social at Harry and Jean Shaw's, where he met Jean Colclough, his future wife. Mentions that he was engaged at the time, returned to England for 18 months on Ruahine, a Port Line cargo ship. Describes his participation in a fance dress ball on board ship as Gussie Morgan, a Wimbledon centre court player, borrowing clothes from Elaine Huntz and Elva Lane from Dunedin. Adds that he queued for tickets at Wimbledon with his girlfriends. Recalls travelling on his 250cc. motorbike to the home of a shipboard friend called Lobby, singing hymns around the piano, learning 'How Great Thou Art'. Describes a European tour with two girls and a pharmacist from Dunedin, mentions a Consul car, camping. Explains the difficulties of leaving parents. Describes how his brothers and sisters were separated on the death of their mother and relates where they were placed. Talks of his stepmother. Mentions travelling by sea to the Olympic Games at Melbourne in 1956 and arriving in Wellington on the Wanganella, meeting Jean Colclough and the Shaws again. Explains how he became a Methodist, mentions his wedding. Recalls that he was homesick, discusses what he loves about England and his pride in it in wartime. Talks of the air raid shelter made by his father, a bricklayer, who grew roses and made wine, mentions sugar rationing. Recalls the bombs, unexploded shells, doodlebugs landing. Relates that he was an auxiliary fireman at age 16, describes the action of enemy bombers close to London.
