Description: Interview with Brian McMahon, born in Dunedin in 1929. Interviewer's summary: Born and raised in Dunedin. No military tradition in family though relatives served in World War I. Attended Catholic primary schools and Otago Boys High School where participated in cadet training. World War II was a significant event during secondary school years. Attended Otago University where studied Medicine. Joined the Otago University Medical Company but left after failed medical examination. Worked in hospitals for several years, including period as Superintendent, Cromwell Hospital. Married in 1956. 1966 decided to join army, served in Waiouru before posting to Malaya where was RMO, Infantry Battalion, Terendak Garrison, Malaya. Accompanied by family. Briefly visited Vietnam early 1969 - spent time in Vung Tau, Nui Dat and Bong Son and met members of the Australian Armed Forces. Returned to Vietnam September 1969 where served as Medical Officer, 1st NZ Services Medical Team, Bong Song. Left Vietnam April 1970. Topics covered in this interview include: Military training - school cadets, OUMC, Waiouru and Malaya. Bong Son township, hospital and surrounding countryside. Medical duties - primarily treating the civilian population for infectious diseases, illnesses and war related injuries, training the local workforce and work in community (Public Health Officers & at Dispensaries). Medical supplies - sourcing drugs, bloods and equipment. Bong Son Hospital workforce - the NZ medical team and the Vietnamese hospital workforce - doctor, nurses, translators etc - training and skills; relationships within and between teams. Description: Miss Vera Hayward, born and has spent most of life in Dunedin. Father managed a furniture business, mother a machinist before marriage and then a housewife and mother. A very close knit family and a strong commitment to community service and the university - their home and late Vera's hosted student groups on a regular basis. Vera trained as a teacher and was involved in that profession for about 35 years, initially as a teacher and later in the role of visiting teacher - she pioneered the Service in Otago. Vera's life long interest in children, their education and the plight of teachers is reflected by her involvement in a variety of organisation from the NZEI to establishing a children's clinic while servicing on the Dunedin Hospital Board. Vera's community service has extended to many other areas including contributing much time and energy to the war effort during WWII and many years spent on the Dunedin Hospital Board. In 1956 Vera was awarded an MBE. After her parents died Vera shifted to North East Valley and then to her home in George Street. She continues to take an active interest in the community and community issues. Description: Chappie McGowan was born in Invercargill in 1913. Describes how his father worked at the paper mill for fifty six years. Talks about his mother being Presbyterian, becoming Catholic when she married his father and his parents having strong religious views. Notes they did not oppose alcohol and they and Chappie made home brew. Describes how Mataura was in a `dry' area until prohibition was voted out. Mentions making elderberry wine, parsnip wine and beer. Talks about `Waimahaka swamp juice' and Mr Enright. Mentions Mr Enright's whisky was delivered to the rabbit sheds where he was foreman. Describes heavy fines and jail sentences for making Hokonui whisky. Comments on the role of Customs rather than the police in bringing charges. Discusses the influence of the Depression and the war on the popularity of Hokonui. Contends that people were in it to make money. Description: Ron Ashby was born in Gore in 1937. Gives details of his family background, his parents' meeting and moving to Mandeville where his father was a rabbiter, farm labourer and seed dresser. Describes how rabbits were a source of income and part of the family diet. Describes a family of ten children and their move to Gore to work at the Fleming and Company factory in 1950. Describes Fleming's products Creamoata, rolled oats and oatmeal and the Fleming's symbol Sergeant Dan. Recalls family relationships, discipline, going to the pictures and music being a large part of their lives. Mentions pipe bands and playing in a dance band. Recalls going to Sunday School and leaving school to make a financial contribution to the family. Recalls getting a labouring job with Flemings in 1952 and then being offered an engineering job. Comments on limited employment in Gore, the predominantly male workforce at the time and the fewer jobs now available at Flemings. Interview with Ev Hill

Description: Ev Hill was born in Invercargill in 1926. Recalls a close relationship with his father who had a difficult time in World War I and was given a very poor rehab (rehabilitation) farm after the war. Recalls living in a tent on a farm his father bought in Gorge Road. Describes a religious mother who was a Salvation Army officer and head of the local Temperance Union, regular attendance at church and an absence of fun. Recalls the values of `God and the King' passed on by his parents. Mentions that the Mataura Licensing Trust was `dry' until 1954. Recalls having his first drink of Hokonui whisky, made by local supplier Major Gerald Enright (known as the Major or Del), when he was fourteen. Describes Hokonui as the `local moonshine'. Discusses the Major, his farm and stills, amiable relationship with the community, regular attendance at Mass and friends in high places providing petrol coupons. Comments that everyone, including the Inland Revenue department and the police, knew about the Major's activities. Explains how he became a driver for the Major from 1941-1942 because he wanted a motorcar. Describes how the Major bought him a 1934 Chevrolet for which he worked, doing deliveries of Hokonui around Southland, Otago and Christchurch, until the car was paid off. Notes he worked for him for about a year. Describes the smell of cooking the mash for the alcohol and the process of distilling it. Discusses his delivery routes, safe houses, the excise men, a network of informants and an incident when he transported Constable Bandy to an accident when the car was full of Hokonui. Mentions the Major was later prosecuted. Comments on the legacy of Hokonui.
