Native of Dunblane, Scotland. Came to Wellington from Glasgow on the 'Bengal Merchant' in 1840. Worked with various business firms before setting up as an independent merchant. His premises in Old Customhouse St. were totally destroyed in the great fire of 1856, but he soon re-established his business. For 12 years served on the Wellington Provincial Council; was a J P; President of the Caledonion Society; very interested in sport; and was a trustee of the Basin reserve. Married Mary Ann (née Gosling (1820?-1889). Died on 21 Nov 1880, at his residence, Ingestre-street, aged 70 years (Evening post, 22 Nov 1880, p 2). Buried in the family plot at Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington.
