Description: Transparencies of South Westland, including river and beach areas, and images relating to "meatshooters", 1967-1971. Taken by Les Cleveland. Photographs include the airstrip at Mussel Point, Haast Beach, musterers on horseback with dogs driving cattle on the banks of the Haast River. A number of images are taken from the air. A series of images relate to "Meat Planes" and "Meatshooters" [deer hunters?] with planes and helicopters photographed on the Waiatoto River flats. In a mountainous area a man [holds?] the bottom [skid?] of a helicopter in flight. A series of images show Mike T Bennett. He is seen smoking, carrying a pig on his back, with the severed head of a deer, with a large pile of antlers, and at a "meatshooters" camp by a fire. Lorraine Bennett is photographed cooking and Rosina [Sands?] is seen with her children at a Mussel Point location. A series of images show the Bennett family and "Haastians" having a picnic at Mussel Point. Mussel Point airstrip photographs also include other unidentified children of meat shooters. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams'). The first slide shows the house at 48 Hume Street, Crows Nest, Sydney owned by friends of Mr Williams. The next group are taken from a published guide to the Tarawera eruption, some showing the area before the eruption and one of the effects after the eruption. The following slides show scenes on the West Coast and Canterbury. Many relate to geological and rock formations, including Punakaiki pancake rocks, a sample of orbicular granite at Karamea and a high terrace at Karamea, rocks in the sea at Scotts Bay, cliffs on the Rakaia River, and moraine at Franz Josef Glacier. There are also images of white rata, cows heading to milking and on pasture, and a butter factory in Christchurch. The last two images were taken by Neville Hatwell, one of the Tasman Glacier from the air, and one of the road over the Crown range. Slides on this sheet are numbered 746-897, with nos. 756 to 825 (all on Australia) removed for a lecture series which Mr Williams gave when he returned to England. Those removed are filed in a later sequence. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 898-899, 901, 903, 905, and 921-922) to create representative collections on New Zealand and Australia which he used in lecture series on his return to England. Description: The original watercolour on which the lithograph "Hokitika River" is based (Barraud's "New Zealand graphic and descriptive", London 1877), shows a view of the Hokitika River. Shows two men with their equipment, standing in the right foreground, on the near bank of the Hokitika River, with snowy mountain ranges in the background. There are several cows on the sandy flats on the opposite bank of the river. The men may be drinking or smoking. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - [Signature and date] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
