Description: Three seated Caroline Islands men, two in profile, one facing the viewer. The man on the left holds a pick. All three have tattooed limbs. One is naked, one wears a waist belt, one a loin cloth. Based on an ink drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1822-1824 visit to the Pacific. This proof engraving lacks the title but includes other lettering and is derived from Chazal's redrawn watercolour and published as Plate 51 for L. I. Description: A row of four Caroline Islands men, all dressed in their characteristic costume. The Pingelap man on the left has tattoos, his hair in a topknot, a loin cloth and necklaces and holds a paddle. The next man on the left has different tattoos and his hair loose. To the right of centre is a third man wearing a waist band, his tattoos on his upper body. On the far right is a man in a coolie-style hat and a tunic. Based on an ink drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1822-1824 visit to the Pacific. This proof engraving, lacking the title but including the other lettering, is, in its turn, based on a watercolour version prepared by Chazal. It was published as Plate 57 for L. I. Description: Two Caroline Island women on a beach. Both have tattoos on their limbs and are wearing a band of woven fabric around their hips. Both also have flowers in their ears. The left hand-woman, who is standing, holds a calabash formed from a large leaf. Based on an ink drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1822-1824 visit to the Pacific. This proof engraving, lacking the title but including the other lettering, was in its turn based on a watercolour version prepared by Chazal. It was published as Plate 52 for L. I. Description: Shows a thatched hut, visible behind a group of four men, three of them sitting. Notable on two of those sitting, and on the standing man are the dotted tattoo patterns on legs and arms. The standing man holds gourds or coconuts. In the right foreground, chickens peck the ground for food. In the right background are two additional figures and a hut, and in the left background, a man in a European jacket walks by. There are palm trees behind the huts. Plate 98 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. French edition (1835-36), has same plate and has the additional information that Danvin was the copyist.Monin engraved the French version, but the engraver for the Italian version is not given (it may also have been Monin). PLate 28 in F P Litke's "Voyage autour du monde 1826-29" (1835-36), where it is attributed to Postels. Both wear earrings, and have their hair bound on top of their heads. Plate 102 in Domeny de Rienzi's book. Milot engraved the French version, but the engraver for the Italian version is not given (it may also have been Milot).
