Beswick, Joseph Sutton, 1831-1888

Represented Mandeville in the Provincial Council (1862-1867, 1870-1874); member of the Stewart executive (1866-1867); and of the Kennaway executive (1871-1874), as provincial treasurer. Also represented Kaiapoi in Parliament 1866-1867, though he unsucessfully campaigned for the Kaiapoi seat in the general election of 1875. In business as a grain merchant at Ashburton for some years; appointed magistrate at Lyttelton; and in 1882 was transferred to Timaru, where he spent the rest of his life. Son of Samuel and Annie Beswick, of Scarborough, Yorkshire. See DNZB / Scholefield (Vol 1, p66).

Description: Text purports to give the programme for a concert starring Bowen and Beswick. However, it is a satirical political poster commenting on two of the contestants for the Kaiapoi seat in the 1875 general election, Charles Bowen and Joseph Beswick. The election coincided with the 25th jubilee of the Canterbury Province. Bowen won, but not by as large a margin as the poster predicted. "Songs" featured in the concert include "Charlie is my darling", "How many legs has a sheep", "Not for Joseph", "Kaiapoi was glad when they departed".
