Description: Land clearance and development projects during the 1950s. Photographs show examples of techniques and machinery used for bringing in land such as rolling and crushing scrub and using cattle to crush and clear lupins. Much of the land developed for agriculture during this period was pumice land. There is a slide sequence designed to show methods for establishing pasture on this particular soil type, and a number of other slides showing the finished product -- productive farms in the Rotorua area. Landblocks named in this collection are, Newstead Block, "Rushden" Waipukurau, Lynwood F. S., and Okahukura Block. March writes of his early life and family, schooling at Greenwich, joining the merchant navy, maiden voyage of `John Taylor' to Bombay and return trip to London, voyage to and from Melbourne in the same ship, brief description of voyage on same ship to Lyttelton in 1853 (after which he remained in Christchurch), his entry into the local Immigration Department office, marriage, appointment to Crown Lands Department and ending with the death of John Ballance.
