Description: Herbie Freeman worked at the Civic Theatre for forty nine years beginning in 1939. Recalls that he began as office boy then began his two year apprenticeship as a projectionist in 1940. Describes the projectionist's room and his work as a projectionist. Mentions some of the difficulties including threading machines, repairing broken film and handling foreign language films. Notes that he also looked after the house lights, the motor for the curtains and the music. Describes the popularity of newsreels and the presence of Americans during World War II. Mentions that they hired the Wintergarden and stars included Bob Hope and Artie Shaw. Describes the Wurlitzer organ and the gondola which housed the Wintergarden band. Mentions working long hours, meeting his wife Mary at the Civic and also working at the Strand Theatre. Recalls that the Moodabe family took over the Civic in 1946 as part of the Amalgamated chain and Hoyts took over later. Describes some of the popular long running films, rivalry buying films, the arrival of Cinemascope and the effect of television. Describes working for Kings Theatre and then as projectionist for the New Plymouth Opera House. Talks in detail about the Opera House with an emphasis on the backstage work involved in setting up live shows. Describes the fly floors, lighting, screens, special effects and alterations to the Opera House. Recalls the Kiwi Concert Party touring after World War II, Webster Booth, Ann Zeigler and the Rambert Ballet. Describes properties owned by New Plymouth Pictures and recalls theatre managers. Talks about making equipment parts, maintaining projectors, building theatre equipment and a visit to the Foxton Motion Picture Museum.
