Hart, George, 1820-1895

Came to New Zealand with his brother Robert on the `Mary' in 1843. Settled in Wellington. In 1848 moved to Canterbury where he took up the Winchmore Run in 1853. Returned to Wellington and was elected to the first Provincial Council for Hutt in 1853 which he represented to 1861. In 1859 he married Kenison James and shortly after left Wellington to take up his residence in Canterbury. In 1866 took over Fernside and Birch Hill properties. In 1867-68 he was a member of Canterbury provincial executive. Elected to represent Coleridge in Parliament in 1879 but defeated at general election a few months later by E G Wright.
