Lindsay, Lionel Arthur, 1874-1961 :[Cartoon on horse racing, with an Australian bookmak...

By: Lindsay, Lionel Arthur (Sir), 1874-1961; Turnbull, Alexander Horsburgh, 1868-1918

Reference: A-091-002

Description: Shows a ship sailing for New Zealand, watched by a race-goer or bookie, pulling his empty pockets out of his trousers. The ship contains an Australian bookie of dubious character, smoking a cigar and waving cheerfully to the watcher. Also on the ship are a racehorse and many bags of money. Refers to a period when legislation was introduced in 1907 in New Zealand, by Sir Joseph Ward, allowing licensed bookmakers to operate on race-courses. This attracted many Australian book-makers, some of doubtful honesty. The legislation was repealed in 1910. Probably drawn for the Evening News, Sydney; or possibly for The bulletin, Sydney While the drawing may refer to G C Stead's successful racing trip to Australia, the figure shown in the ship does not resemble Stead, who was white-haired and bearded. Stead died in 1908 Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - 'After Hy Julius' (i.e. Henry Julius, a reference to the inventor of the electric totalisator) Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Ink drawing, 245 x 228 mm Provenance: Collection of Alexander Turnbull? Turnbull purchased a large number of etchings and drawings from Lionel Lindsay. This may be the drawing referred to in 'Catalogue of pictures and art objects in the Alexander Turnbull Library' [1942 or later], p. 8, as 'Lindsay, Lionel. Caricature of Stead's successful racing trip to Australia'
