Description: Oral history project by interviewer Jennifer Styles recorded to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Historical Branch, Department of Internal Affairs. The four interviews cover the experiences of those who worked in the very early days of the Historical Branch. The interviewees are Robert (Bob) Burnett, Janet Paul, Frances Porter and Nancy Taylor. Topics discussed include publications such as the 1940 centennial surveys, 'Meet New Zealand' and the first historical atlas, as well as people such as Joe Heenan, John Beaglehole, John Pascoe, and Guy Scholefield. Description: Collection contains a 4th edition of `New Zealand in Review: An illustrated digest of interesting information, historical, geographical and otherwise, relating to New Zealand' compiled and illustrated by James Berry. Published in Wellington by Hutcheson, Bowman & Johnson, 1943. Collection also contains original page layouts created by Berry, research notes, and correspondence between Berry and John Marryatt Hardcastle. James Berry was a commercial artist famous for creating the designs on New Zealand's first decimal coins. His illustrated booklet 'New Zealand in Review' was first published in 1940 while Berry was working as an artist at the Dominion. 'New Zealand in Review' ran to four editions in 1940, 1941, and 1943. Description: Comprises 15 electronic mailboxes of Judith Binney, from her personal email address, j.binney@clear.net.nz, containing 15,665 emails dated January 2002 to May 2011, relating predominately to Binney's career as an academic, writer, and board trustee. Major topics relate to Binney's academic life, including seminars, conferences, travel, field research trips, and conversations with her publisher, Bridget Williams Books. Also includes emails relating to Binney's roles on the Board of Te Papa Tongarewa, and the Guardians/Kaitiaki of the Alexander Turnbull Library. There is also a small amount of personal emails to Binney's family and friends. Mailboxes organised by type include: 'old sent' containing 5597 emails from January 2002 onward; 'old inbox' containing 1240 emails; 'Inbox' containing 2607 emails from January 2009 onward; 'Sent Items' containing 2147 emails, from 2008; 'Mail 2007' containing 1619 incoming messages; 'Mail Jan-June 2008', containing 671 incoming messages; 'Sent 2007' containing 656 messages; 'July - -December 2008' containing 470 messages; 'Sent Jan-June 2008' containing 458 emails; 'Drafts' containing one email ; and 'SPAM' containing two messages (one of which is not actually spam mail). Mailboxes relating to particular subjects or people include: 'Turnbull' containing 149 messages; 'Arts Council' containing 14 messages; 'Photos' containing 24 messages; and 'Hutton N Whare' containing ten messages. Emails include inward and outward correspondence, including some strings of correspondence. Many emails are single replies, without the inclusion of the original email to which it is responding. The emails include 2707 unique non-image attachments, such as conference papers, writings, drafts, and presentations, and 1779 unique image attachments. Title supplied by Library Emails retained by the donor separately from the Outlook mailbox files are described at MSDL-3680. Arrangement: The arrangement of digital files reflects the folder structure in use at time of transfer. Files transferred from digital folder called 'Outlook Express'. Mailbox folders were mainly organised based on email type (incoming or outgoing) and by time period, rather than by email subjects or correspondents. Quantity: 15 Electronic document(s) Outlook Express backup files (.dbx). Processing information: Copies of the Outlook mailboxes were loaded into ePADD software for processing. The majority of emails were not previewed as part of processing. Not all names have been indexed.
