Date: 1937-1941
From: Hawkes, L A, fl 1930s-1940s :Photograph albums relating to the Cook Islands and Niue
Reference: PA1-o-1269
Description: Most of this album contains photographs taken in Niue. There are also three pages of photographs of Samoa. It opens with a view of the landing place at Alofi seen from the deck of the "Maui Pomari." Included are scenic views (mostly coastal) of the island, the people, the hospital and other Government buildings at Alofi. New Zealanders include Resident Commissioner Captain William Moody Bell and other members of the administration, two nurses one of whom is Matron L A Hawkes, doctors M Rose and Hunt, and tourists. The hospital buildings are recorded in some detail. There is a general view of the hospital as well as individual photographs which also include the support buildings such as the out patients clinic, the nurses home, the laundry, and the house and garden of Doctor Hunt. Many of the photographs are of Niuean nurses all of whom are named. Other Niueans depicted include fishermen, two displaying a large eel, others fishing the reef with spears. There are photographs of babies and young children, of people gathered at two feasts, one to celebrate the opening function of a brass band, and the other to celebrate the completion of a house, a group of children and visitors at the hospital on Christmas Day 1941, school girls dressed for a taditional dance with (presumably) their teacher Mr Edmonds, and men building a road supervised by Mr Jennings, Two pages of photographs record the visit to Niue of the Governor General Vicount Galway, and show two arches of welcome constructed for the occasion, the official party at the stone where the kings of Niue were crowned, Niueans dancing, and the crowd watching the ceremonies with the warship Achilles in the background. Two fruit crops are recorded. One is of the granadilla vines (Passiflora quadrangularis) growing on the Government farm, the other is an example of a branching pawpaw (actually a papaya, Carica papaya). There is also a photograph of a group of Niueans working in a field. Three photographs show old Niuean graves two with carved figures, and one with offerings to the dead placed on it. There are three pages of photographs of Samoa showing views of Apia from the deck of the "Maui Pomari," Apia Hospital, Samoan fale, and Robert Louis Stevenson's grave. L A Hawkes who compiled this album, and who appears throughout it, was the Matron of the Hospital at Alofi. Later in the 1940s she was Matron of the Hospital at Avarua, Rartonga.
