Kahe, -1871?, Kahe, Peti, -1871?, Peti Te Rau, -1871?

Te Ati Awa leader, trader, innkeeper. A chieftainess of the Ngati Toa tribe, she signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Kahe was an accomplished swimmer who swam from Kapiti Island to Te Uruhi (Waikanae) when under attack at Waiorua (1824). She had three husbands, including a pakeha husband John Nicoll, or Nicholl, (sometimes known as Scotch Jack), and as many as 21 children, although few survived to adulthood. Her grandson was the celebrated Maori parliamentarian Sir Maui Pomare. She is related to both the Ngati Toa (Ngati Te Maunu) and Ngati Mutunga tribes.
