Rene was a chief of the Ngati Toa tribe and grandson of the chief Te Tahua who settled at Kapiti Island on Ngati Toa's arrival on the Kapiti coast in the early 1820s. The Rene family are still resident at D'Urville Island and Porirua, and are closely associated with Ngati Koata.
