Description: David grew up in Wanganui. Outlines family background - maternal grandparents came on the SS Caroline from Cornwall in 1875. Grand father worked as manager of moulding shop of S Luke and Sons in Wellington. Refers to Sir John Luke and Sir Charles Luke (Mayor) cousins of mothers. David's father came from London having studied at the London School of Guilds and was employed by Public Works in Wellington but finally moved to Wanganui where he was in charge of the architectural side of the public works building. David describes the home designed and built by his father at Bastia Hill and describes the process of hand making cokerbreeze bricks. Explains how the Wanganui river was a focal point in their lives. Refers to skippers, Mark Nicholson, Andy Anderson, Jimmy Jackson (Klinker Jim), Alf Harris and Billy Robertson. Recalls as a child seeing the accident of the Ohura. Mentions the `Wakapai', 'Waireka' and the 'Ongarue'. During World War II, David was in the Ambulance Corps. He was drafted into the 4th Reserve Motor Transport Co. Territorials at the age of 19, going to the Pacific in 1942. Recalls boarding the SS West Point with 9,000 men. After the war David decided to go into carpentry and went to Rehabilitation school and in 1948 he and his brother (who apprenticed at Walpole & Patterson's) decided to start own firm, Emmett Brothers, building a workshop at Tui Road. They built houses, schools, nursing homes, the Whangaehu Bridge and other government projects. One of their biggest projects being the Cobham Bridge. Describes the effect the floods had on this project. David talks about Arthur Coates, manager of Pipiriki House. Describes the history of the River Trust. Refers to the `Waiti' the River Trust Steamer. Description: Frederick Clarence (Clarrie) Hooper born Makarau, North of Auckland 1904. Gives family background in detail - both grandparents came to New Zealand ca 1860 - grandfather Boler was in business as a confectioner - father's brother, Pat Hooper won DCM in World War I (1914-1918) - great uncle, Cecil Clinkard was MP for Rotorua. Refers to George Clinkard who was New Zealand's High Commissioner in Belgium during World War II. Recalls childhood at Tauhoa; relationship with parents, childhood activities - fishing, excursions and picnics on Kaipara Harbour; social life; religion; politics, with refernce to J G Coates; education with reference to teachers, Mrs De Montorque?, Mrs Bird, Opai ? Asher, Dave Watt, Mousey Bishop, Rev J K Davis, and Joe Tibbs (headmaster). Backgrounds his decision to apply for Customs Department as a cadet and recalls his first day in the Longroom in Auckland, Feb 1921. Describes in detail: Auckland Longroom - rules, dress code etc; shipwreck of the `Wiltshire' at Great Barrier Island in 1921; salary; social life in customs; work as a shipping clerk; pillaging; apointment to Statistics Department in Wellington 1924-1927; statistical work with tariff returns; social life in Statistics Department; appointment to Napier Customhouse; work at Marine Department, tobacco excise - perks from National Tobacco Factory (Napier); searchers and preventative officers' work, with reference to Opium. Recalls in detail the Napier Earthquake of 1931 - rescue efforts and damage to building etc - Customs work came to a standstill, until a few weeks later when they were moved to a camp at Palmerston North Showgrounds.
