Charles W Martin and Company Ltd :'Norvic' light air gas system. So simple to work. Sol...

Date: 1912

From: [Ephemera of quarto size relating to gas as a fuel, natural gas, gas production]

By: Charles W. Martin and Company Ltd.; Wright & Carman Ltd

Reference: Eph-B-GAS-1912-01

Description: Advertising pamphlet for the Norvic arc gas system shows an illustration on the front, of a small girl operating the machinery, advertised as "the simplest safest and most compact system of lighting for country mansions, houses, bungalows, hotels, churches, drill halls, public buildings, railway stations & villages". The test explains the Norvic system, and gives hints on the selection of a lighting system. Asserts that acetylene was "good in its time, now outclassed", and gives comparative costs of various lighting systems. Manufacturers were Bolton & Paul, contractors to the Admiralty and War Office. Dated from an article in the Evening Post, 31 October 1912, page 17, column 4, which gives the same prices for comparative costs of heating. It states: "The exhibit of the" Norvic" light by incandescent electric light by C. W. Martin and Co., of Tory-street, Wellington, is one of the most striking features of the show. It is installed in an improvised drawing-room, which it illuminates, and in which gas-cooking demonstrations are given. The "Norvic" system, as is explained at the exhibit, is based on the principle of utilisation of air in the dilution of petrol vapour. In effect the gas is practically all air - to be correct, it is composed of 2 per cent of petrol and 98 per cent of air. But the "Norvic" system has the advantage over petrol air gases, in that the air is heated up to about 105 Fahr. before it is incorporated with the petrol. The result is a pure clean odourless gas, which never condenses in the pipes, and is all consumed". Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph on folded sheet, 280 x 115 mm. Provenance: Donated by C W Martin, 2011. Transfers: Other material of the same provenance is housed at MS-Group-1939.
