Description: Oral history interview with siblings Maureen and Mervyn Castle, grandchildren of John Castle one the original benefactors of Wellington Zoo. Describe their grandfather in detail. Recollect his looks and character, and narrate his life in London, immigration to New Zealand and eventually becoming a well known Chemist in Riddiford Street, Newtown. Mentions other family members including their grandmother Annie, their father Mervyn Athol, their uncle Raymond Castle, and their aunts Una and Zillah Castle. Talk about their grandfather founding the Zoo with others including Rev. John Crewes, and the donation of the first animal 'King Dick' the lion. Refer to the letter from Wellington City Council granting their grandfather and the Castle family free admission to Wellington Zoo. Mervyn and Maureen talk about their first memories of Wellington Zoo and being taken there by their grandfather. Recalls an incident where an escaped monkey took refugee in their backyard in Daniell Street in the late 1950s. Mentions elephant rides and hearing the roar of the lion from their home.
