Description: Interview with James Beard, born in Christchurch in 1924. Refers to his family background and his schooling in Wellington. Comments on working as a cadet in the Public Works Department before studying architecture at Auckland University College. Talks about the Auckland School of Architecture, the intellectual liberalism at the university, and the stimulus of older students after the war. Mentions Ian Reynolds, George Porter, Graeme Kofeod, Bill Toomath, Derek Wilson, Leo Arnold. Discusses working for the Auckland office of the Ministry of Works, returning to Wellington in 1947, and the establishment of the Housing Department. Comments on the importance of mass housing being designed by architects. Refers to the importance of Government building and construction activity before and after the war. Discusses the 1926 Town Planning Act and the replacement 1953 Town and Country Planning Act. Comments on opposition to the 1953 Act and the erosion of its provisions over the years. Mentions the role of the Ministry of Works in overseeing town planning standards. Discusses developing his work in town planning, land use, higher density development, and influence of a period he spent at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. Description: A view of the facade of the Kelburn or Skyline Tea Kiosk building facing the city. In the background is a wireless mast on the top of Tinakori Hill. At the far right is the dome of a small observatory dome set in a concrete base. There are two houses on the slopes below the kiosk at lower right. Date estimated from the fact that a probable former owner, John Munro, died in 1916. John Munro was a friend or pupil of the artist, and it is likely that the painting was formerly owned by him. The Kelburn Kiosk was built in 1904. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - [Signed] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 283 x 355 mm. Provenance: Mrs Staffan's uncle, John Munro (1893-1916) attended Palmerston North Boys' High School, ca 1910, where Len Watkin was an art teacher; John Munro was a friend or pupil of the artist. After the death of John Munro during World War I in 1916, the watercolour passed to his brother, the father of the donor.
